Buying Guide – Main Things to Consider
When it comes to choosing the best snake boots, many different options will become available to you. Knowing which material, height, weight and style to choose can become overwhelming rather quickly.
However, it’s essential that you know what to look for, as snake boots could potentially save your life. We’re going to take a look at some of the most important features found on snake boots to help inform your decision.
One of the first things worth considering is the height of the boots. The higher the boots, the more protection you get and that’s incredibly important.
You should always opt for the highest boots that fit you comfortably for maximal protection. It’s better to be safe and protected than to regret if something were to happen.
Snake boots shouldn’t weigh you down, so you should try to go for lightweight boots. Fortunately, with today’s technology, manufacturers are capable of making very lightweight snake boots without compromising on the level of protection.
A proper pair of snake boots should feel lightweight and easy to wear even over long distances, such as when you are on a hike or even a hunting trip.
Many snake boots are waterproof. However, you may come across some snake boots that aren’t.
We prefer waterproof snake boots simply for convenience. The last thing you want to be worried about is whether or not you can walk through puddles or streams without your feet getting wet. Getting wet feet is unpleasant and can lead to infections, so its best to be avoided by opting for waterproof snake boots.
Chances are, you will be wearing your snake boots for off-road adventures. Having a sole that provides excellent traction is very useful. Some snake boots offer superior traction, which is ideal for rocky and uneven surfaces.
We know this seems obvious, but there difference in tread can make all the difference. Even if two brands state that their boots have good traction, we’ve found that in some cases the difference in grip can be massive.
Some snake boots have pointy tips, which can get uncomfortable after extended periods. Like all shoes this shape can cause unnecessary pain to your toes and ultimately your foot so be sure to choose a style that suits your feet.
Choosing snake boots with a rounded toe area will allow you to wear them for hours at a time in complete comfort. But this applies to the majority of people, if you have a personal preference for shoe shape then it is best to go with what you know.
You will most likely be wearing snake boots during hot summer days. Choosing boots that offer great breathability will allow your feet and ankles to remain cool at all times.
This can also be beneficial with hiding your scent. Most manufacturers have added scent protection regardless, but this will be even more effective if your sweat is wicked away efficiently.
In-Depth Reviews of the Best Snake Boots
Our number one choice is the Rocky Men’s Lynx Waterproof boots, and for good reason. Not only do these boots look the part, but they are packed full of features to keep you not only safe but comfortable when walking through snake-prone areas.
First things first, these boots have ‘Snakeproof’ fabric which can protect you from even the most venomous snakes according to the manufacture. We were fortunate enough to not have to test this out ourselves, but the material does seem very tough.
The material is also waterproof, which is essential considering there are lots of snakes that prefer to hide in swamps and marshes. The midsole of the boots keeps your feet comfortable, and the lace-up feature makes it very easy to take these boots on and off. Overall these boots are highly comfortable and safe to wear.
You’ll notice some options on our list are priced quite highly, but as our number one option these boots are very reasonably priced which is yet another great point about them. The only negative is that there have been reviews of the zip getting caught, but we believe using a lubricant can solve these issues easily.
Coming in at number 2 in our list is another pair of snake boots by Rocky. As well as offering protection from snake bites, these boots are also waterproof – so you’ll have no problem wearing these for your outdoor activities.
These boots are particularly comfortable, having memory foam soles means they fit around your feet and get more comfortable with time. The sole also has EnergyBed technology which gives you more of a spring in your step.
These boots have been designed specifically for hunting with added camouflage so are great for those of you who enjoy that lifestyle.
We recommend buying a size larger than you would normally wear to allow for sizing, but apart from that they should fit extremely well.
These are another great option, but we preferred the overall aesthetic of the Lynx version as the top contender.
Another good option for snake boots is the Nylon Snake Boots by Guide Gear. Guide gear are well known in the outdoor community for their quality of equipment and these boots are no different.
They are made from 900D nylon alongside ‘Snake Guard’ material to give you great defence from potential snake bites. They are 17″ tall which is plenty of coverage for your legs and are 100% waterproof, so you don’t need to worry about water hazards.
These boots are particularly great for hot weather, as they have no added insulation and contain an internal mesh that is designed to wick away sweat and increase breathability.
The zip on these boots is a bit questionable though, so be careful when using it. Like we mentioned before, using some lubricant on the zip will go a long way to increase the longevity of these boots. Like some of the other options you’re best opting for a larger size than usual here.
Another well known brand makes it into the list at number 4. These boots by Muck Boots are worth considering if you prefer rubber material for your snake boots. We know some people swear by rubber and these boots provide the perfect option for those of you who do. This rubber is certified for snake bites, so you don’t have to worry about losing out on any safety due to the rubber material.
Again, these are waterproof and designed to perform well in a variety of outdoor conditions such as snow or mud. The sole is also designed for comfort, with 3d airmesh lining throughout the boot to improve breathability and sweat management. An antimicrobial insert is also present, which neutralises foot odours further reducing the chance of getting bitten.
The only issue we found is that the aesthetics are what some would call boring. If you’re into plain, discrete colours then this will be right up your street – but we personally like camouflage better.
Moving on up in price range and you’ll stumble across these snake boots by Chippewa. If you want a pair of snake boots that truly stand out from the crowd then look no further. The reputation of the Chippewa brand is well known to anybody in this space, and the quality that these boots have is truly outstanding.
At 17″ in height you’ll get more than enough protection from a mix of 80% cordura and 20% leather. The insole is removable as well so you can change the fit depending on what you prefer, as well as the entire boot having Chip-A-Tex waterproof membrane to keep any water away.
The only reason that these aren’t higher in the list is due to the pricing. They are certainly worth spending more money on, but here at Outdoorgearup we want to give true value without simply promoting the most expensive products. If you have the money to spend, then it would be a smart investment to pick up something like these boots.
Another snake boot by Rocky makes it way into the list at number 6. We liked these boots because they are very reasonably priced compared to some of the other options on this list.
With the standard features you would come to expect such as waterproofing and snake-proof assurance these boots are a great buy if you’re on a budget. They’re also slightly smaller than some of the other options at 16 inches, so be sure to keep that in mind.
The quality is still pretty good, but isn’t up to par with some of the more expensive options that we have listed – which is why we’ve not placed these higher up in the list.
These snake boots by Twisted X are crafted from full grain leather and have Twisted X Viperguard material to give full protection from snake bites.
We’ve added these to the list because of their classic aesthetical appearance. We love the full leather look, and we’re sure this will appeal to some of our readers as well.
Don’t be fooled by looks though, these boots are packed full of all the features you could want. They’re fully waterproof and have good breathability due to air-mesh lining, which means they’re suitable for most outdoor activities.
The outsole is specifically crafted for grip and traction, while the insole and midsole are crafted for support and stability for your feet. If these boots were a little less expensive they would be higher on the list, they are a great pair to consider if you’re looking for the full leather appearance.
Designed for any terrain is another set of boots by Rocky. The material of these boots is bullet-proofed by high abrasion snake guard technology alongside Rocky’s Briar and Thorn Guard. The combination of these features means you can wear these boots pretty much anywhere and they are very unlikely to be damaged – if safety is your number one priority then take a look at these boots.
Again these boots are waterproofed to allow access into and through water bodies, complimented with a rubber outsole designed for grip and traction on most surfaces. The back zipper allows easy access to removing the boots quickly if you need to, as well as a lace up front for a more classic look.
While sure to last for many years to come, the one thing we didn’t like is the fit on the heel. These boots can be difficult to break in, so you might want to think about wearing thick socks if you decide to pick up a pair.
At number 9 is another set of boots from Chippewa, probably the most well-known brand for boots in this space. If quality and craftmanship is your number one consideration then these are the boots for you.
It’s hard to argue that these boots don’t look incredible, and for the price tag they certainly lived up to our expectations. They are crafted with 100% brown Oro Russet leather and fabric with adjustable straps for added comfort. The vibram sole is especially comfortable as well, making these a great option.
You might wonder why these appear so high up the list, and the answer is simple. These boots are not fully waterproofed, which is a big problem for us. We like to show products to our audience that are field tested and useful in many different environments, and these boots don’t fit that requirement. They are a great pair of quality boots, but almost too nice to be used day in and out in rough environments.
To round of our list is these snake boots by Guide Gear. These boots offer loads of great features such as waterproofing, snake guard fabric and buffalo leather material at an affordable price. We particularly liked the design of these boots alongside the removable cushion insole that helps to keep your feet comfortable on long hikes.
There were a few issues we ran into, however. In deep water there have been reports of the waterproof guarantee failing and the actual fit of the boots is quite harsh on your feet when you are breaking them in. Despite this we still think that they deserve a place on the list due to the other great features that they have.
Frequently Asked Questions
As part of our research we like to take a look at some of the most common questions that are asked when people are looking for outdoor gear.
When it comes to snake boots, we’ve found a few of these questions and answered them below.
Can snakes bite through rubber?
The answer is yes – most snakes you’ll encounter won’t have any issue biting through a layer of thin rubber, like that found on most standard outdoor boots. You could choose to wear thick rubber, which can provide quite a lot of protection, but it isn’t as comfortable to wear.
Thankfully, snake boots are designed with a bite-proof layer between the inner and outer material of the shoe that is tested to prevent any snake bites from getting through.
Do snake boots actually work?
As you will have just read, snake boots are field tested so that they prevent any bites from getting through. So, in this sense snake boots do work. A lot of snake boots have odour neutralising technology as well which will prevent a lot of snakes biting in the first place.
Remember though that they can only provide so much coverage of your leg, so it is best to still be cautious even while wearing them.
How high should snake boots be?
In an ideal world as high as possible is better to provide more coverage to your leg. However, almost all snake boots are designed to go somewhere close to your knee, which in most cases is enough.
It depends how comfortable you are in your location to how much protection you need. You can always wear a pair of Gaiters as well to add even more protection.
What are Snake Gaiters?
Snake gaiters are another type of protection for your lower legs to be used to protect against snakes. They are more heavy duty than snake boots, and look like cushions strapped to your lower leg.
They are very similar to chaps which are another option for lower leg protection
