Best One Person Tent 2021

When you have a pack to carry, every ounce and every unit of volume matters.

Backpackers, hikers, hunters, you know what we mean.

When it comes to factoring in shelter, you try to find something that is sturdy, lightweight and efficient option, and some of you want the most cost-efficient option since you don’t plan to use the tent very often.

In our guide below, we’ll highlight the best one person tent options and provide you with a few useful tips that will help you choose the right one for your needs.

We realize that it’s one of the most important pieces of gear you’ll in your pack, which is why we’ve done some extensive testing and research.

Check them out!

Where to Begin?

Hold the rainfly!

Here are a few things you should take into consideration in order to select the right tent.

  • Think About Seasonal Protection. 3-season tents are the standard for most backpackers since they can stand up to the wind and precipitation.

If you know that you’ll be sleeping in colder climates or snow, then opt for a 4-season tent.

  • Think About the Weight. Because as we said, every ounce counts when you’re carrying a pack!
  • Think About the Size. If you won’t be carrying the tent around in a pack, then focus more on the amount of interior space it provides you and where the door is located.
  • Think About the Setup. You can choose a freestanding tent or a non-freestanding tent. There are benefits and drawbacks to each type, but for ease of set up and take down, a non-freestanding tent is probably the way to go.

What About a Bivy?

The bivy is the best one person tent for those of you who want to travel extremely light: minimalist backpackers, for example.

It’s basically a sleeping bag with a higher roof. You can fit your sleeping bag and your body inside and a small amount of space between your body and the ceiling once you’re inside. Definitely not something you want if you suffer from claustrophobia!

We’ll be discussing the Snugpack Ionosphere 1-Person Tent below, which is the only bivy we included on our list.

Top 3 Best One Person Tent Reviews

1. Ionosphere

If you’re looking for something super compact, lightweight and well-constructed, have a look at the Snugpack Ionosphere. This is a military-approved bivy, friends, so pay attention!

  • Flysheet included
  • 4 pounds
  • Includes repair kit
  • 190T nylon (inner portion of tent)
  • Aluminum stakes (no cheap plastic)

This bivy is unique since it has an inner tent made of mesh, which will keep the bugs and mosquitos at bay if you prefer to sleep out under the stars.

When you need a little more protection, the fly is made of polyester rip stop with a 5000mm waterproof PU coating, which means you’ll stay bone dry even if it’s pouring outside.

This is an awesome little bivy and one-person tent. Not spacious, but it is certainly well made.

2. Lynx

The best one man tent for those of you on a budget is the ALPS Mountaineering Lynx 1.

It has a vestibule so you can store your gear or change out of your wet clothing before entering into the tent, mesh storage pockets and a gear loft and a durable poly-taffeta flooring with a 2000mmm waterproof coating to keep you dry.

  • Measures 90” x 32”
  • Weighs 3 lbs. 8 oz.
  • 5 season
  • Aluminum stakes

You won’t find another tent of this quality within this price range.

3. Copper Spur

Since this is more of a serious investment; we’d recommend this 1-person tent for the serious backpacker who hits the trails often. You need something that is well constructed, well designed and made from high quality materials. Backpackers who settle for cheaper tents usually end up regretting it, so save yourself time and money by paying a bit more up-front. It will last!

Big Agnes is a freestanding tent that best combines all of the features one looks for in a quality tent: it is small and lightweight in the pack, spacious once it’s set up, it has double walls for moisture protection and breathability and

  • Measures 90” x 42” x 30” (narrower at the foot and wider at the head)
  • Weighs 3 lbs. 15 oz.
  • 3 season

A footprint is available to purchase separately if you’re interested.

We realize that not all of you are willing to spend this much on a tent, but if you backpack or camp often, it’s so worth it.
