Best Backpacking Cookware 2021

When you head out backpacking, every ounce counts.

Planning the contents of your pack takes time, and you will definitely need some quality cookware that doesn’t weigh you down.

Below, we highlight the six best backpacking cookware set and individual pots that will allow you to boil water, cook meals and store extra gear as you hike. Don’t forget to look for a backpacker cookbook, while you’re at it! There are plenty of ways that you can prepare simple, tasty meals on the trail with just a few ingredients.

Consider This Before Buying Backpacking Cookware

While you’re comparing and contrasting brands of cookware, consider the following:

  • Store Extra Gear. When you’re not using the pots, you’ll find that they’ll serve as additional storage space for your extra gear. Fuel canister, lighter, first-aid kit or any other small items that you’ll need. Pots with locking lids help you keep the contents securely inside, as well!
  • Weight. Some materials are heavier than others so evaluate how much the weight of the pot (aluminum, stainless steel, etc.) will affect your pack.

You may even be better off with one pot.

  • Utensils. Don’t forget to pick up some cooking and eating utensils if you don’t already have them. You’ll find that sporks work great, and some utensils combine a spoon on one end and a fork on the other end.

Look for items that provide you with various uses to save space and weight!

Pot Materials

When you are backpacking, there are two pot materials that you’ll want to stick with:

  • Stainless Steel. Solid and durable, stainless steel can take the tough hits in your pack or around your temporary campsite, and it’s also scratch-resistant.

Although it doesn’t conduct heat as well as other materials and you have to be careful about hot spots that can burn your food, if you need a pot to simply boil water, then this is a great option.

  • Aluminum / Anodized Aluminum. Aluminum is great for those who need the lightest cookware in their packs.

Regular aluminum is very lightweight and a good heat conductor, but you do sacrifice durability since it is more delicate.

Hard anodized aluminum is tougher and lasts longer due to the anodic oxide finish. It’s lightweight like standard aluminum and just as efficient, with the benefit of being stronger.

This is a great all-around option for those who need their cookware for a little bit of everything.

3 Best Backpacking Cookware Sets Reviews

1. Stanley Cook Set

If you need a great boiling pot, the Stanley Stainless Steel pot is great.

The outside of the pot features engraved measurement marks, so you can accurately measure the amount of liquid you add. The lid has a handy tab that allows you to lift it without burning your fingers and it is vented to release steam as you cook.

Rustproof, dishwasher safe and it comes with two insulated cups that fit right inside the pot when you’re not using it.

For backpacking, camping or meals on the road, this is an awesome addition to your gear. Make sure you have one on your next backpacking journey! Great for boiling water, coffee and other liquids.

2. MSR Alpine Stowaway Pot

The previous pot was great for boiling water due to it’s tall, narrow design.

If you’re looking for something flatter and wider that you can cook a meal with, then go with the MSR Alpine Stowaway Pot.

It comes in four different sizes: 9.5-ounce, 13-ounce, 15.5-ounce and 19.5-ounce so choose your size based on the number of backpackers you’ll be cooking for.

This is a durable, dent-resistant pot that will give you years of use. A favorite of many solo backpackers and campers.

A fresh, hot meal is right at your fingertips!

3. GSI Outdoors Pinnacle

This hard anodized aluminum set features everything you’ll need for two people out on the trail. It’s durable and lightweight, and has all of the essentials you and your fellow backpacker require.

Two bowls, two sporks, two mugs with lids that you can sip through, a bot for boiling liquids with fold over handle (to keep everything locked inside when it’s in the pack), a stove back and welded stuff sack that you can use as a sink when you’re ready to wash everything.

This is probably the best backpacking cookware set available,  but be careful with the sporks as they can be a bit delicate.
