“How much water should I take when camping?” This may sound to be a common question to many who are lovers of the outdoors, but for those who will camp for the first time, it can be confusing – so, how much water do you need to bring when camping?

You must have enough water when you are camping someplace cause the body will need at least two to three liters of water daily for adults, two to two and a half for children, and if there is a dog, he will need over a liter of water per day. But that is not all you use water for because you still have countless activities where you need to use water.

WHAT ARE THE FACTORS TO CONSIDER WHEN ESTIMATING THE WATER THAT YOU WILL NEED TO BRING WITH YOU?

WHERE ARE YOU CAMPING? Camping where there is not much shade around or the environment is too hot and dry will cause your body to be thirsty more often than usual. Your body will perspire a lot, and you will need to replenish the fluid loss in your body.

WHAT ACTIVITIES WILL YOU BE DOING? If you are going there to stay in one place compared to going out in the sun for the day or if you will be exposed to the sun the whole day, this will increase your water intake.

WHAT IS THE WEATHER WHERE YOU WILL CAMP? If the weather is windy and there are enough shades around, this will not get you thirsty as often, but just the same, you cannot say much about the weather as it changes fast.

WATER FOR COOKING – you will probably cook rice, or oatmeal when you are camping, so you need water to make this happen. When you also make some instant pasta, although it is instant – water is the key ingredient to cook it. So making sure that you have enough will also equate to not get hungry while camping.

WATER FOR HYGIENE – you will surely need some more for washing your face, hands, feet, and then there is brushing your teeth, these are instances that you need more of the water.

CLEANING DISHES AND COOKING UTENSILS – If you are using dishes instead of disposable plates, you will further require additional water. You will need to clean your dishes after eating so you can have something to use for the next meal. Cooking pots and containers need washing as well or rinsing.

Some campers use paper cups and plates, so there is no need to clean them up after each meal.

WHEN SHOWERING OR CLEANING YOURSELF – this is needed when there are no bodies of water near the camping area, a portable shower will need extra water. Estimating water usage is important, especially when there are several people with you camping. You may use different vessels for the water ration, though if some cars or vehicles can hold the water containers.

WATER FOR COFFEE, HOT DRINKS, AND TEA – if the temperature suddenly gets too cold while you are camping, you will probably want something to add to your body heat, and a cup of coffee or hot chocolate will surely do the trick.

WATER FOR DAY HIKES – When you are going on a hike the next day, you will also need some water with you. For sure, you will be thirsty with all that long walk.

IF YOU HAVE PETS WITH YOU – if the pooch is included in the head count when you go camping, you may need to consider the build, size, and activity of your dog. If he will walk as often as you do and as far, he may need his water tub with him.

WHAT ARE THE PROBLEMS YOU MAY ENCOUNTER WHEN YOU DON’T HAVE ENOUGH WATER RATION WITH YOU WHILE CAMPING ALONE OR WITH YOUR FAMILY?

Symptoms of dehydration may occur, such as dark-colored urine, lack of energy, dry skin and lips, headache and dizziness, confusion, irritability, rapid heartbeat, rapid breathing, and loss of consciousness.

WAYS TO BRING WATER WHEN CAMPING

The best way to bring water is by placing it on barrels, jugs, and water bottles. You may bring a jug, with a faucet, so this will lessen the need to carry big containers and pouring them on glass or small water bottles. You may also separate the water depending on its usage.

One would be water for drinking, and the other container will be used for other necessities such as cleaning, hygiene, showering, and such.

WHY DO YOU NEED TO HAVE MORE WATER WITH YOU THAN NOT BRINGING ENOUGH?

By bringing more than what you need, you are saving yourself from a lot of headaches later on. Having water when you need it is better than looking for a source of water when you are at the camping site.

Sometimes you may need to leave the campground to find water if there is none available, and this is already causing you stress when you are supposed to be enjoying the trip.

You will also feel safer knowing that you have potable and clean water with you instead of accessing water that you are not sure of.

Although there is a camping ground where there is a source of water, some may not be safe for drinking. You may only use it for cleaning minor stuff, and not sure as well if you can use it for hygiene.

If you don’t have any issues with leaving the campground and finding some store where you can buy drinking water if you run low, then this is fine as well, but this negates the reason you came out to camp in some faraway place when you need to leave and find water.

What you can do before you start your trip is to check the camping site or the reviews that you can find online, since there may be people who have tried camping at the place you are going to. This way, you’ll know what else you need to consider – not just water, before going there.
